Autumn Wreath Decoration | Embroidery Sewing Pattern

Debbie Shore's plaited wreath is a gorgeous autumn decoration that's lot of fun to make.

A scattering of leaves around a plaited/braided wreath makes a stylish autumn wreath decoration for your home, with a few toadstools to finish the woodland look! Simple and fun to make, it would look just as nice with green leaves instead of my red and orange, which would create a spring-time wreath. With four leaf templates and two toadstool templates to play with, there’s a lot of scope here for you to create your own look.

I’ve free-motion embroidered the leaves, but you could sew with a straight stitch on your sewing machine if you prefer, and pinking the edges of the leaves would also look nice.

I’ve listed the fabrics I’ve used, but if you wish to make more toadstools or make other personalized adjustments such as using an additional fabric for the leaves, for example, then your fabric requirements will change.

There’s a video on free-motion embroidery on the website if you’d like more help with this. For more autumnal themed crafts, check out my new book Half Yard Autumn Collection that is now available on Debbie Shore Sewing or available via Search Press' website.

Note: use a ¼in (5mm) seam allowance when joining the strips for the wreath.

Finished size: approx. 14in (35.5cm) across.

You will need:

Equipment

  • Sewing machine with a free-motion embroidery/darning foot
  • Hot-glue gun and compatible glue to attach the leaves or you can hand sew them on if you prefer
  • Erasable marker pen: I’ve used a heat-erasable pen but if the ink doesn’t stand out very well on your fabric, a chalk pencil is a good option
  • Optional: a largish knitting needle and/or a pencil for stuffing the tubes

Materials

  • Three 2½ x 44in (6.5 x112cm) strips in different colours for the wreath: mine are mustard yellow, brown and red
  • 6 x 4in (15 x 10in) rectangle of fabric for the band that wraps around the wreath join: mine is brown
  • 5 x 16in (13 x 40.5cm) piece of fabric in each of four colours for the leaves
  • Three 4 x 3in (10 x 7.5cm) pieces of red fabric for the toadstools: I used three different red fabrics for variety
  • 22 x 4in (56 x 10cm) strip of cream fabric for the toadstool stems and backs
  • Toy filler to stuff the wreath
  • 14 x 16in (35.5 x 40.5cm) piece of fusible adhesive webbing: I used Bondaweb
  • Short length of string to hang the wreath: 4in (10cm) or more will do
  • Strong sewing threads to match your three fabric strips
  • Thread for the free-motion embroidery: I used black for a hand-sketched look
