Debbie Shore's fun twist on a log cabin uses different widths of fabric to create a quilt block.

By using different widths of fabric strips, Debbie Shore adds dimension and visual interest to this month's patchwork quilt block. This variation allows for a playful mix of colors and patterns, transforming the traditional log cabin design into something modern and exciting. The play of colour makes the central cross design stand out. Why not try experimenting with colour placement to create your own look? Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced quilter, Debbie's method makes it easy to master this classic quilting technique.

Block size: 10in (25.5cm) square finished; 10½in (26.75cm) unfinished.

Note: Make four identical units.

• Sewing machine
• Rotary cutter and cutting mat
• Quilting ruler

• Fabrics (see my Introduction to the 2020 Block of the Month). From these, you will need:
  • Four 4½ x 1in (11.5 x 2.5cm) strips in background (BG) fabric
  • Four 4 x 1in (10 x 2.5cm) strips in BG fabric
  • Four 3 x 1in (7.5 x 2.5cm) rectangles in BG fabric
  • Four 2½ x 1in (6.5 x 2.5cm) rectangles in BG fabric
  • Four 1½ x 1in (4 x 2.5cm) rectangles in BG fabric
  • Four 1in (2.5cm) squares in BG fabric
  • Four 5½ x 1½in (14 x 4cm) strips in PAT 2
  • Four 4½ x 1½in (11.5 x 4cm) strips in PL 4
  • Four 4 x 1½in (10 x 4cm) strips in PL 5
  • Four 3 x 1½in (7.5 x 4cm) rectangles in PAT 1
  • Four 2½ x 1½in (6.5 x 4cm) rectangles in PAT 4
  • Four 1½in (4cm) squares in PL3
  • Four 1in (2.5cm) squares in PAT 3
