Turkey Trot Block of the Month #2 | Christmas Quilt (2022)

To make the Turkey Trot quilt, we’ll be using the Dresden Plate technique (you may remember this from our 2020 quilt) and raw-edge machine appliqué.
What is the Dresden Plate technique you may ask? The Dresden Plate technique in quilting is a popular method used to create a stunning circular block made up of pieced wedge shapes, often resembling a flower or plate but in our case, the turkey's feathers. The wedges are usually appliquéd onto a background fabric, creating a contrast between the vibrant, colourful pieces and the background. The Dresden Plate design can be used in various ways, including as a standalone block, in borders, or as part of a larger quilt design. The technique is known for its intricate appearance but is relatively simple to piece together with the right tools and careful sewing.
As our main motif – the turkey – is made using appliqué, remember you'll need to attach adhesive sheets to the backs of the pieces before sewing everything together. For help with this, see the instructions for the adhesive sheets in the Introduction to the 2022 Block of the Month.
Unfinished trimmed block size: 12½in (31.75cm) square.
