Stitch Debbie Shore March’s quilt block, which features an abstract star wreath.
To make our Star Wreath quilt block, we will be using a combination of the English Paper Piecing (EPP technique) and hand appliqué – this is simply hand-stitching the applique onto the background fabric with slip stitch.
English paper piecing is an age-old technique for hand-sewing quilts. It involves wrapping scraps of fabric around pre-cut paper templates, then joining together a little bit like a jigsaw to create a pattern. You don't need any special equipment, just fabric, needle and thread and pre-cut paper templates. The templates come in a variety of shapes, hexagons being the most popular, but for this block we are using diamonds.

You will need:
Equipment
- Sewing machine
- Rotary cutter
- Cutting mat
- Quilting ruler
- Repositionable spray fabric adhesive
- Fabric glue pen
- Paper, for the EPP: I used general photocopy paper
- Hand-sewing needle
Materials
- Hand-sewing thread
- Fabrics (see my Introduction to the 2022 Block of the Month). From these, you will need to cut:
- One 1¾ x 18in (45.75cm) strip of fabric in each green (1st Green, 2nd Green, 3rd Green), for the wreath
- Two 2½ (6.5cm) squares of Gold, for the bells
- Two 2½in (6.5cm) squares of interfacing or lightweight fabric, for interfacing the bells
- You will also need the one 13in (30.5cm) Background square, as noted in the Introduction (see the cutting information)
