A Trio Of Tree Block of the Month #4 | Christmas Quilt (2022)

Sew Debbie Shore's stunning quilt block of Christmas trees using Foundation Paper Piecing.

This Christmas quilt block is made up of three foundation paper pieced units, each made separately. If you haven’t done Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP) before, it’s a quilting method that – once mastered – will be your go-to technique for creating sharp points. Once you’ve got used to placing the fabrics on the back of the paper template while stitching along the lines from the front, all will become clear and you’ll get into a steady working flow. We’re starting with a simple tree before developing the system further in another block later in the year.

For all three trees, there’s no need to purchase specific FPP paper – simply print out the templates provided onto normal copy paper. You could also reproduce them on tissue or greaseproof paper, if you prefer, or even a lightweight sew-in interfacing that doesn’t need to be removed on completion.

TIPS:

  • Reduce your stitch length slightly to 1.8mm.
  • Press after stitching each seam.
  • When removing papers, try not to stretch the fabric and the stitches. If you’re having difficulty with it, dampen the paper; this should help.
  • Use your quick unpick/seam ripper to help remove the papers by hooking it under the papers.

Unfinished trimmed block size: 18½cm (47cm) wide x 6½in (16.5cm) high.
