Drunkards Path At Christmas Block of the Month #5 Quilt (2022)

Debbie Shore will teach you a modern twist on the traditional Drunkard's Path quilt block.

A Drunkard's Path quilt is a traditional quilt pattern featuring curved shapes, typically made up of a combination of two distinct pieces: a quarter circle and a square. The pattern is known for its flowing, curved design that creates a distinctive swirling or "path" effect, resembling winding roads or a path that meanders like a drunken walk. The Drunkard's Path block is made by sewing the curved pieces together, and when arranged in rows, it forms a dynamic and visually appealing pattern.

This month’s block is slightly more challenging, as you’ll be piecing and sewing a curved seam. However, there are a few handy tips you can follow to make this curved quilt block easier to make. The first is spray all the fabrics with spray starch before you begin; this gives your curve shapes more structure, and stops them from distorting. The next tip is to snip into the seam allowance of one curved edge before sewing, as this introduces more ease to the fabric and – again – stops distortion. Finally, I like to add a little glue to the other curved edge with a fabric glue pen, as this holds them together before stitching and makes the whole process much easier. (There is more information about how to use these last tips in step 1 below.) If you prefer to pin though, that’s fine.

Untrimmed block size: 12½in (31.75cm) square.

Edited (05/05/2022): Unfortunately, an incorrect shape B fabric was listed in the requirements on this project's release date. We are very sorry about this. The metallic fabric to cut with shape B should be 1st metallic, not 2nd metallic. Please know the 'Materials' list has since been corrected.
