Reach For The Stars Block of the Month #8 Quilt (2022)

Debbie Shore's festive quilt block this month is a trio of stars, each worked as separate squares.

These Christmas stars are made using the Foundation Paper Piecing technique. If you’d like a reminder of how to do Foundation Paper Piecing, I recommend revisiting the initial Foundation Paper Piecing instructions, tips and template folding information for April’s quilt block – ‘A Trio of Trees’.

What is Foundation Paper Piecing? Foundation paper piecing (FPP) is a quilting technique where fabric pieces are sewn onto a paper foundation in a specific order, following a pattern. The paper serves as a guide to keep the fabric pieces precisely in place and helps maintain accuracy in complex designs. Once the fabric pieces are sewn, the paper is removed, leaving behind a clean, sharp design. FPP is especially useful for creating intricate or detailed patterns, such as geometric shapes, because it ensures perfect alignment and allows for smaller, more precise pieces to be sewn together.

As with 'A Trio of Trees', August’s block is made up of three individually pieced blocks, each measuring 6½in (15.5cm) square. We’ve provided you with one copy of each template for each star, all on the same sheet. Print out four copies of this sheet on to normal copier paper.

Untrimmed block size: 18½in (17cm) wide x 6½in (16.5cm) deep
