YUM (2 of 2) Block of the Month #7 | Christmas Quilt (2022)

Learn how to raw edge machine applique with Debbie Shore's easy quilt block tutorial.

There are two blocks for our quilt-along released in July, and here is the second. This quilt block features everyone’s favourite red-nosed reindeer, and in his mouth he’s holding a ribbon carrying the traditional British Christmas-day dessert – the Christmas pudding! Both of July’s blocks are made with raw edge machine appliqué.

What is raw edge machine applique? Raw edge machine appliqué is a quilting method where fabric shapes are attached to a background fabric with the edges left raw (unfinished and not folded), usually with the help of fusible interfacing to secure them in place. The shapes are then stitched down using a sewing machine, creating a visible, unhemmed edge on the appliqué piece. This technique is a fast and easy way to add designs to fabric and is often used in art quilting to achieve a more natural appearance.

Untrimmed block size: 6½ x 18½in (16.5 x 47cm)

Edited (22/07/2022): Unfortunately, the fabric stated for the hanging ribbon on this project's release date was incorrect. We are very sorry about this. The fabric from which to cut the hanging ribbon should be 2nd red. The antlers fabric requirements have also been added. The 'Materials' list has since been updated.
