Log Cabin Posy Block of the Month #10 | Quilt Sew-Along (2023)

Debbie Shore's quilt block features a log cabin design with flowers radiating out from the centre.

It's time to make the next instalment in your quilt sew-along: the Log Cabin Posy. In keeping with the rest of the quilt, it’s still fairly abstract and with the four flower blocks set on the diagonal, it has a dynamic feel, similar to that of the Electric Fan blocks.

If you are an experienced quilter, you may notice similarities to a Bear’s Paw quilt block, but this block is constructed in a very different way, Foundation Paper Pieced (FPP) in a log-cabin style, stitched on a paper foundation using the stitch-and-flip method. Using this method, you’ll be stitching through your paper template and your fabric pieces at the same time. If you haven’t done this before, take your time stitching the first few pieces and you’ll soon find that it’s actually very straightforward when you get the hang of it. It’s an extremely useful method to learn because it enables you to stitch even complicated blocks with accuracy.

The construction method means that it is easier to start with slightly larger fabric pieces than required and then trim the pieces as you go. This gives you some useful wiggle room and will help you sew a perfect block. So, keep your rotary cutter or fabric scissors handy because you’ll be trimming before stitching each seam. You will also need to stitch with a shorter-than-usual stitch length. This helps to perforate the paper along the stitch line so that the paper template can be easily torn away once the stitching is complete.

Untrimmed block size: 12½in (31.75cm) square
