Debbie Shore's quilt block features classic patchwork shapes with an abstract feel.
Although the Cross Keys block looks complicated, it’s actually very easy to make. It’s made up of four units in two colourways. By reading through the instructions and paying particular attention to placement piecing, you’ll be able to create this contemporary, bold design in no time.
As with the previous blocks, I have machine pieced Cross Keys for speedier sewing; however you could hand-stitch the pieces together if you wish.
This particular block marks the end of row 2 of your quilt. If you wish to stitch the blocks together for this row, click through for the Quilt As You Go method. This technique enables you to quilt your individual blocks right to their edges before adding sashing and borders, which makes the whole process more manageable.
Untrimmed block size: 12½in (31.75cm) square

You will need:
Equipment
- Sewing machine
- Rotary cutter
- Quilting ruler
- Self-healing cutting mat
- Fabric Scissors
Materials
Fabrics (see my Introduction to the 2023 Block of the Month). From these, you will need to cut:
- Four 4½in (11.5cm) squares in WW
- Four 2½ x 4½in (6.5 x 11.5cm) rectangles in FAB1
- Four 27/8in (7.5cm) squares in FAB1
- Four 27/8in (7.5cm) squares in FAB3
- Two 2½in (6.5cm) squares in FAB3
- Four 2½ x 4½in (6.5 x 11.5cm) rectangles in FAB5
- Two 2½in (6.5cm) squares in FAB5
