Suitable for beginners, make a traditional Snail Trail quilt block with Debbie Shore's photo tutorial.
Our first quilt block for 2024 sweeps across the entire width of the quilt where sand meets sea, representing the waves in a striking snail pattern, and getting you off to a flying start. This row is made from the traditional Snail Trail pieced block, based on the square-within-a-square technique. By clever placement of fabric colour, it gives the impression of waves rolling onto a sandy shoreline. You’ll need to make six identical blocks in total, which we’ll join in a row. The blocks are quite easy and straightforward to make, but correct colour placement is crucial, so take a bit of extra care over this.
Untrimmed block size: 36½ x 6½in (93 x 16.5cm), made from six square blocks, each 6½in (16.5cm) square joined in a row.
Note: Stitch with an accurate ¼in (5mm) seam allowance throughout.

You will need:
Equipment
- Sewing machine
- Rotary cutter
- Quilting ruler
- Quilting mat
- Optional: square ruler
Materials
Fabrics (see my Introduction to the 2024 Block of the Month). From these, you will need to cut:
- Six 15/8in (4.1cm) squares in FAB2
- Six 2½in (6.5cm) squares in FAB2 – cut diagonally into 12 triangles
- Six 31/8in (8cm) squares in FAB2 – cut diagonally into 12 triangles
- Six 4in (10.2cm) squares in FAB2 – cut diagonally into 12 triangles
- Eighteen 15/8in (4.1cm) squares in FAB4
- Six 2½in (6.5cm) squares in FAB4 – cut diagonally into 12 triangles
- Six 31/8in (8cm) squares in FAB4 – cut diagonally into 12 triangles
- Six 4in (10.2cm) squares in FAB4 – cut diagonally into 12 triangles
