Riding The Prairie Point Waves Block of the Month #2 (2024)
Moderate |
Quick Links: What you'll need Project steps
Debbie Shore's quilt block combines two fun techniques: machine appliqué and prairie points.
It's part two of your quilt sew-along. The boat in this quilt block is raw-edge machine appliquéd. I’ve used a zigzag stitch but if you have another favourite stitch, it’s fine to use that. I’ve also used a one-colour contrasting thread (medium grey) around all the appliqué pieces, but if you prefer to colour match your thread to the appliqué fabric, then please do so. Practise stitching on some scrap fabrics first so you can be sure that you are happy with how the stitches look, especially if using a contrasting thread, because your stitches will be on show. If you are struggling with this, match your thread to the colour of the fabric piece so they aren’t so obvious.
I’ve added continuous prairie points at the base of the boat (stitched into the seam line) to give the impression of breaking ‘white horses’ on the waves. Traditional prairie points are made from fabric squares individually folded on the diagonal twice and then slotted into position, but here you’ll find a quick method for making a whole row of prairie points in the same fabric quickly.
Note: There are three raw-edge machine appliqué blocks within the quilt, as well as the anchor and birds. In each case, refer to steps 1 and 2 of the instructions for this block to prepare your shapes using the fusible-web method.
Unfinished block size: 8½ x 14in (21.5 x 35.5cm)
