Christmas Capers Quilt Block Cushion Cover | Sewing Pattern

Make Debbie Shore's Christmas-themed set of cushion covers in time for the holidays.

Stitch a stunning set of Christmas-themed cushion covers for the festive season, inspired by three traditional quilt blocks. Three of the blocks in the Block of the Month 2022 quilt – Christmas Logs (block 1), Turkey Trot (block 2) and Pretty Poinsettia (block 11) – are all the same size, at 12½in (31.75cm) square, and this means they are readily adaptable for festive sets. With an added border and flange, they make a stylish set of Christmas pillows! The envelope back means they are simple and easy to stitch, and you can also re-create them in different fabrics if you wish.

Finished size: Each cushion/pillow is 15½in (39.5cm) square.

Note: Use a ¼in (5mm) seam allowance.

Edited (15/11/2022): Unfortunately, the instructions in step 7 were incorrect on this project's release date. We are very sorry about this. Please know the sides to be hemmed are the 17in (43cm) edges, not the 11in (28cm) edges. The instructions on the website and in the PDF are now correct.

You will need:

Equipment

  • Sewing machine
  • Rotary cutter and cutting mat, or fabric shears
  • Quilting ruler
  • Erasable fabric marker

Materials

Gather:

  • Fabric for the three blocks from your Block of the Month instructions – click on the links above to see each block's fabric requirements
  • 44 x 6in (112 x 15cm) of contrast fabric for the border: mine is red (and is the 2nd Red used from making up this year's quilt)
  • 44 x 42in (112 x 106.5cm) of backing/flange fabric: mine is plain white
  • Three 13in (33cm) square cushion/pillow pads: if you can’t find 13in (33cm), use 12in (30cm) and pad out the space with a little toy filler
  • 26 x 13in (66 x 33cm) of fusible fleece wadding/batting: you could use regular interfacing, but I find there’s less lint going into my machine when quilting with a polyester fleece

Cut:

  • The (red) border fabric into 1½in (4cm) wide strips
  • The (white) backing fabric into twelve 2 x 20½in (5 x 52cm) strips for the flange, and six 17 x 11in (43 x 28cm) rectangles for the cushion backs
