Cookie the Panda | Toy Week Variation by Chrissy Yeomans

Create a cuddly variation of Cookie the Panda Bear this “Toy Week”! This bear is made of soft fleece and very huggable!

Three years ago, Cookie the Polar Bear first came to the Half Yard™ Sewing Club, and it’s been a joy to see members stitch their own variations of Cookie each Christmas. For “Toy Week” I thought I’d show off one of my favourites: Cookie the Panda by Chrissy Yeomans.

Note: The instructions below are from the original project.

About Sewing with Fleece Fabric

Fleece is a forgiving synthetic fabric with some stretch that doesn’t fray, so it’s easy to work with and washes well. When you join the pieces, there will be times when you may need to “ease” the seams, stretching slightly to make the pattern pieces match. This is perfectly acceptable and all part of the process and is a benefit of using stretch fabric.

Difficulty level

This project has been ranked as moderate. If you’re a beginner, making this toy is an excellent opportunity to perfect your hand-sewing and practise with printed pattern pieces, so I’d recommend giving it a go all the same!

Top tips

  • When cutting out the toy pattern pieces, if they state ‘cut two’ then make sure they are mirror imaged.
  • I’ve used a safety toy nose and safety eyes, although I still pop a little strong wet fabric glue behind them to be sure they are secure! You could make the eyes and nose in black felt if you prefer.
  • You could personalize your Cookie by making some cute accessories – perhaps a hat or scarf?
  • If you’d prefer to watch a video tutorial before making Cookie, refer to the original project here .

Size: 19in (48.25cm) tall

Note: Use a ¼in (5mm) seam allowance throughout, unless otherwise stated.

You will need:

Equipment

  • Fabric shears
  • Sewing machine
  • Hand-sewing needle and thread
  • Erasable fabric marker pen
  • Optional: strong wet fabric glue to ensure the eyes and nose are really secure – I’d recommend this if your bear is for a young child

Materials

  • 59 x 35½in (150 x 90cm) of fleece fabric
  • Approx. 17½oz (500g) of toy filler
  • Two toy safety eyes and one nose: I used ⅜in (10mm) eyes and a nose ¾in (20mm) across
