Everyday Handbag | Debbie Shore Sewing Pattern With Video

Make Debbie Shore's handbag sewing bag that's designed for everyday use.

Get organized for the new year with this month's gorgeous yet handy handbag for all your everyday needs! This stylish bag is large enough to use for work, with lots of pockets to keep you organized! It has smart piped detailing, which I bought ready-made. You’ll want sew-in piping which has a flat section that is sewn into the seam. If you prefer, you can make your own by covering plain cord (without the flat section) in bias binding.

My lining fabric matches the piping cord, and I’ve used it for the bag strap, D-ring tabs and pocket flap but, if you prefer, you could use the main fabric for these or even choose a third fabric. You can also buy ready-made leather bag straps to clip onto your bag if you’d like.

Finished size: 15¼ x 11 x 2?in (39 x 28 x 6cm)

Note: Use a ½in (1.25cm) seam allowance unless otherwise stated.

Edited 01/02/21: Unfortunately, the height of the inside pocket on the template sheet was incorrect when the project first published. We are very sorry about this. The template is now correct on the downloadable pattern PDF.

You will need:

Equipment

  • Sewing machine
  • Fabric shears
  • Hand-sewing needle
  • Paper scissors

Materials

  • 1 yard (1m) of 44in (112cm) wide outer fabric – I used a navy and white cotton fabric
  • 40in (1m) of 44in (112cm) wide lining – I used co-ordinating plain navy cotton fabric
  • 13 x 40in (32 x 100cm) of fusible fleece
  • 3½yd (3.25m) of sew-in piping cord – I’ve used shop-bought
  • 16 x 3¼in (40 x 8cm) mesh bag base
  • 22in (56cm) zip
  • Magnetic snap fastener
  • Two 1in (2.5cm) D-rings
  • Two 1in (2.5cm) swivel clasps
  • Four bag feet
  • Optional: 20 x 44in (50 x 112cm) of firm but not heavy interfacing – this makes the bag firmer but may not be necessary if you’re using a heavy fabric such as canvas
