Simple Fabric Storage Boxes | Beginner Sewing Pattern

Debbie Shore's handy boxes make perfect storage for sewing patterns and notions.

Looking for a beginner sewing pattern for storage? Download this easy box pattern today! I’ve trimmed mine with lace and added a toggle to lift the lid, but ribbon and a button would work just as well. To personalise the boxes, you could add appliqué to the sides. The edges of the panels are finished with a satin stitch, but if you have an overlocker/serger the job will be a lot faster and neater!

I’ve hand sewn the sides of the boxes together, but you could use hot glue and a hot-glue gun if you prefer. Although I’ve used single-sided fusible foam, double-sided could be used on this occasion.

Finished sizes:

  • Large: 8 x 8 x 8in (20 x 20 x 20cm)
  • Medium: 7 x 7 x 7in (18 x 18 x 18cm)
  • Small: 6 x 6 x 6in (15 x 15 x 15cm)

You will need:

Equipment

  • Fabric scissors
  • Iron
  • Basting/tacking spray – I used 505
  • Sewing machine
  • Wet fabric glue
  • Optional: serger/overlocker, hot glue and hot-glue gun

Materials

Gather:

  • 42 x 30in (107 x 76cm) each of outer and lining fabric for the large and small boxes –  I used extra-wide 100in (250cm) backing fabric, in which case a 10in (25cm) strip will suffice
  • 37 x 15in (94 x 38cm) each of outer and lining fabric for the medium box
  • 42 x 28in (107 x 71cm) single-sided fusible foam; I used In-R-Form by Bosal™
  • Three wooden toggles
  • 12in (30cm) ribbon, ¼in (5mm) wide, to trim the toggles; cut into three 4in (10cm) lengths
  • 90in (230cm) lace trim

Cut:

  • For the large box, cut five 8in (20cm) squares of each outer fabric, lining fabric and foam for the box, and one 8½in (21.5cm) square and four 8½ x 1½in (21.5 x 4cm) rectangles each of outer fabric, lining fabric and foam for the lid.
  • For the medium box, cut five 7in (18cm) squares each of outer fabric, lining fabric and foam for the box, and one 7½in (19cm) square and four 7½ x 1½in (19 x 4cm) rectangles each of outer fabric, lining fabric and foam for the lid.
  • For the small box, cut five 6in (15cm) squares each of outer fabric, lining fabric and foam for the box, and one 6½in (16.5cm) square and four 6½ x 1½in (16.5 x 4cm) rectangles each of outer fabric, lining fabric and foam for the lid.
