Farmhouse Toy Box
Easy |
Quick Links: What you'll need Project steps
This handy storage box will bring the kids hours of fun in the farmhouse!
The box is quite simple – just four sides and a base, with appliquéd animals on the sides. The appliqué is quick and fun to work, and you can use the appliqué shapes as often as you like: on drawstring bags, quilts, birthday cards, mobiles… the list is endless!
The box is quite soft, so the seams are supported with boning. This is not essential, but it does give a firmer shape to the box. I’ve simply drawn some of the features on the animals, but you can embroider them if you prefer. If you decide to do this, you’ll find that it’s quite difficult to hand embroider through foam, so apply the foam after working the embroidery.
Finished size: 18 x 9 x 9in (46 x 23 x 23cm)
Note: Use a ½in (1.25cm) seam allowance throughout

You will need:
Equipment
- Sewing machine
- Fabric shears
- Iron
- Strong wet fabric glue to attach the boning
- Permanent fabric pen: I used a Sharpie
Materials
Gather:
- For the box -
- 18 x 39in (46 x 99cm) single-sided fusible foam stabilizer: I used Bosal In-R-Form
- 40 x 22in (102 x 56cm) of outer fabric: mine is plain brown
- 40 x 22in (102 x 56cm) of lining fabric: my lining fabric is quite flimsy, so I’ve backed it with Vlieseline H250 interfacing
- 34in (86cm) of corset boning
- For the appliqué -
- 7 x 39in (18 x 99cm) of fusible adhesive sheet (1 pack of Bondaweb)
- 8 x 6in (20 x 15cm) of white fabric and 5 x 5in (13 x 13cm) of light pink fabric for the sheep
- 5 x 5in (13 x 13cm) of dark grey fabric and 4 x 3in (10 x 7.5cm) of light grey fabric for the cat
- 6 x 8in (15 x 20cm) of white fabric, 4 x 5in (10 x 13cm) of black fabric and 3 x 2in (7.5 x 5cm) of light pink fabric for the cow
- 6 x 9in (15 x 23cm) of white fabric and 5 x 5in (13 x 13cm) of orange fabric for the dog
- 6 x 8in (15 x 20cm) of yellow fabric and 4 x 4in (10 x 10cm) of orange fabric for the chick
- 5 x 8in (13 x 20cm) of light pink fabric and 2 x 1½in (5 x 4cm) of dark pink fabric for the pig
Cut from the foam stabilizer:
- Three pieces each measuring 18 x 9in (46 x 23cm) for the two sides and the base
- Two pieces each measuring 9 x 9in (23 x 23cm) for the ends
