Block of the Month 2025: Block 8 – Folded Corners

Bust through your stash with this easy, folded corners quilt block tutorial. This is the eighth block in Debbie Shore's optical illusion quilt.

About the block

This 12in (30.5cm) finished size optical-illusion block uses two four-in-one go assembly methods, making it surprisingly easy and satisfying to put together.

This block is based on a 9-patch format, made up of three rows of three square blocks; the two outside rows are the same but in mirror image, while the middle row differs and has a plain centre unit. Making up the individual units in each row first, then assembling the rows and stitching them together, makes this block fairly straightforward to complete.

In making this block, you'll achieve:

  1. Learn four-in-one-go methods for making both half-square-triangle and flying-geese units.
  2. Find out how to make a clever optical-illusion block.
  3. Learn how to piece a 9-patch block: whether plain squares or pieced units, the process is the same.
  4. Add another 12in (30.5cm) block to your repertoire.

Note: stitch with an accurate ¼in (5mm) seam allowance.

Unfinished block size: 12½in (31.75cm) square.
