Gardening Set: Tool Caddy

This super caddy will help you keep your gardening tools organized and would make an ideal gift for a green-fingered friend!

Its many pockets ensures that there’s a place for everything, and there are even mesh pockets on the sides to store damp or grubby items. The dividers inside are removeable, so you can make the most of the space if you need to. And if you want to be really organized, there’s a coordinating apron to make too.

I’ve used a lightweight canvas for the outer fabric, but other strong fabrics, such as denim, heavy cotton or canvas, would work well too. Use quite a small stitch on your sewing machine to strengthen the seams: I’ve used a setting of 2.2 on my machine.

Note: Use a ¼in (5mm) seam allowance throughout.

Finished size: 15½ x 11¼ x 5½in (39 x 28.5 x 14cm)

You will need:

Equipment

• Sewing machine
• Fabric shears
• Erasable marker pen
• Optional: rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat

Materials

Gather:

• 55 x 20in (140cm x 50cm) of outer fabric
• 55 x 17in (140 x 43cm) of contrasting or coordinating outer fabric
• 60 x 22in (152 x 56cm) of lining fabric: mine is red
• 18 x 58in (46 x 147cm) of single-sided fusible foam stabilizer: I used Bosal In-R-Form Single Sided Fusible Foam Stabilizer
• 8 x 16in (20 x 40cm) of mesh fabric (or you can use contrast outer fabric if you prefer)
• 60in (152cm) of 1in (2.5cm) wide webbing for the handles
• 18in (46cm) of ¼in (5mm) wide elastic for the mesh pockets
• 28in (72cm) of ¾in (2cm) wide hook-and-loop tape: mine is red to match the lining fabric

Cut:

• Two pieces of outer fabric each measuring 16 x 11.5in (40 x 29cm) for the front and back
• Two pieces of lining fabric each measuring 16 x 12in (40 x 30cm) for the front and back 
• Two pieces of outer fabric each measuring 6 x 11½in (15 x 29cm) for the sides
• Two pieces of lining fabric each measuring 6 x 12in (15 x 30cm) for the sides
• One piece of outer fabric measuring 16 x 6in (40 x 15cm) for the base
• One piece of lining fabric measuring 16 x 6in (40 x 15cm) for the base 
• Two pieces of contrasting outer fabric each measuring 20 x 8in (51 x 20cm) for the front and back pockets
• Two pieces of lining fabric each measuring 20 x 8in (51 x 20cm) for the front and back pockets 
• Two pieces of mesh fabric each measuring 8 x 9in (20 x 23cm) for the side pockets
• Two strips of lining fabric each measuring 2 x 7in (5 x 18cm) to trim the bottom of the mesh pockets
• Four pieces of contrasting outer fabric each measuring 7½ x 8in (19 x 20cm) for the dividers
