Create functional heart applique storage boxes with Debbie Shore's easy-to-follow sewing pattern.
These handy boxes are great for organising haberdashery and sewing patterns but are equally useful for hair accessories and cosmetics. This beginner sewing pattern includes step-by-step instructions to make two sizes of DIY storage boxes.
The simple heart storage could also be used to store your keys, mini packets of tissues, wrapped sweets, stationery items… in fact, anything you like. This storage project could even make a pretty plant pot cover! I’ve used cotton fabrics with Decovil I Light interfacing, but any firm sew-in or fusible fleece would also work well. The steps below show the process of making up just one of the storage boxes – the larger box. Simply follow the same steps to make the other, smaller box.
Finished sizes:
- Large box – 8 x 8 x 8in (20 x 20 x 20cm)
- Small box – 6 x 6 x 6in (15.25 x 15.25 x 15.25cm)

You will need:
Equipment
- Fabric shears
- Sewing machine
- Iron
- Tacking/basting spray
- Optional: hand-sewing needle, if you plan to hand-sew the gaps closed
Materials
For the large box:
- 36 x 14in (91.5 x 35.5cm) of outer fabric
- 36 x 22in (91.5 x 56cm) of fabric for the heart appliqué and lining
- 36 x 14in (91.5 x 35.5cm) of firm fusible interfacing
For the small box:
- 28 x 10in (71 x 25.5cm) of outer fabric
- 28 x 17in (71 x 43cm) of fabric for the heart appliqué and lining
- 28 x 10in (71 x 25.5cm) of firm fusible interfacing
