Make a made-to-measure pet bed with Debbie Shore’s sewing pattern.
With simple step-by-step instructions, you can give your pet a special place to rest with this custom-fit pet bed pattern. Whether you have a puppy, kitten, dog or cat, this custom sewing pattern can be made in any size, either square or rectangular, to suit your needs. Debbie has used an old 16in (41cm) cushion pad as the base, but you can also use a pillow for a rectangular bed or a folded cot quilt or single duvet for larger beds. When the ribbons are untied, the sides fold down for easy cleaning and transport. The zippered base allows the cushion pad to be removed for washing, and the washable toy filler in the sides makes it even more convenient.
Choose durable fabrics like denim or canvas for the sides and cushion top, and consider using fleece for the centre of the bed to create a snuggly, non-fraying liner. The fleece liner is removable and machine-washable, making it perfect for even the cleanest pets. The instructions are based on a 16in (41cm) pet bed, but you can easily adjust the size to fit your pet’s needs by following the adaptation instructions at the end.
Note: Use a ½ inch seam allowance (1.25 cm) throughout.

You will need:
Equipment
- Sewing machine
- Fabric shears
- Small circle template for step 4 (such as a mug)
- Optional: fabric glue stick, to help secure the zip while you sew
Materials
- 34 x 52in (87 x 132cm) of strong fabric for the bed – I used denim
- 17 x 17in (43 x 43cm) of contrast fabric for the cushion top – I used striped canvas
- Approx. 18oz (500g) of toy filler/polyester fiberfil
- 16in (41cm) zip (or the length of the shortest side of the cushion/pillow)
- 96in (240cm) of ½in (12mm) wide ribbon cut into eight pieces, each 12in (30cm) long
