Wonky Street House Draught Excluder | Debbie Shore Pattern

Add a little brightness to your doorway with Debbie Shore's Wonky Street Draught Excluder.

It's time to stitch a draught excluder! This is such a fun project to sew, particularly if you already have other Wonky Street projects displayed in your home! I’ve themed my picture to run from spring to winter. Mix and match the roofs, doors and windows, add extra trees and greenery, and choose any colour fabrics you like. As there are a lot of small pieces, this is a great time to go through your scrap bag and use up some of those leftover pieces of fabric.

Finished size: 30 x 8in (76 x 20cm)

Note: Use a ½in (1.25cm) seam allowance.

You will need:

Equipment

  • Sewing machine
  • Fabric shears
  • Ruler
  • Free-motion/darning foot for your sewing machine
  • Erasable fabric marker pen or chalk
  • Optional: rotary cutter and cutting mat

Materials

  • 31 x 17in (79 x 43cm) of background fabric: I’ve used cream canvas, but a plain cotton would work just as well
  • Approx. 28 x 10in (71 x 25.5cm) of fabric for the appliqué: I’ve used ten colours for the houses and three greens for the trees. If you’re using patterned fabric, try to keep the print quite small
  • Approx. 28 x 10in (71 x 25.5cm) of fusible adhesive sheet, such as Bondaweb
  • Filling: I’ve recycled scrap fabrics, towelling, fleece and wadding that are cut into small pieces so they don’t look bulky. This is a great way of using old clothes, sheets or any fabric you’d normally throw away! This also makes the draught excluder heavier than just using toy filler, and less expensive too
