Blind hem foot
This foot is perfect for sewing near-invisible hem stitches for garments or items that need hemming, or even for decorative stitching on appliqué.
These feet can vary, depending on the make of the manufacturer and your sewing machine, but typically there's a non-adjustable blind hem foot (see top left in the image above) and an adjustable blind hem foot (top right). Both have guides, but the latter allows the foot's guide to be adjusted to your necessary seam width – ideal if you're hemming a wider or narrower seam.
- Blind hem feet snap onto your machine, so simply remove the standard foot on your machine and drop the blind hem foot into place.
- You will need to select a blind hem stitch on your machine, and I will show you what this looks like in the video. The stitches made with this foot can vary slightly, but generally it's a straight stitch that then swings out into a V-shape to the left every few millimetres.
- Always practise first on a scrap piece of the fabric you'll be using for your main project, or a small section of the hem you'll be sewing. This is so you can see if you need to adjust your hem, or the stitch length.
- To make the hem, you'll need to begin with a double fold – on a curtain, for example, you'll fold over the fabric to the wrong side by 1in (2.5cm), and then again to the length you want the drop to be. Press the fabric.
With the back of the project facing up, fold some of the top main fabric back so that you're just concealing the raw edge of the first fold. This is the section you will sew down. Pin if needed.
Place the fabric in the sewing machine so that this final fold is touching the guide of the foot. - I recommend using a thread that matches your project to be hemmed, or perhaps an invisible thread.
- Why not use your blind hem foot for topstitching, if you're not confident with your stitching? Simply place the edge to be stitched against the guide of the foot, and sew away!
- Similarly, you can use the foot to create decorative stitching for appliqué – place the guide of the foot against the edge of the shape to be stitched, and start sewing!
