Blind hemming

A blind hem is the perfect way to turn up trousers, dresses or curtains

A blind hem is the perfect way to turn up trousers, dresses or curtains: as the stitches are barely seen from the right side of the item, you can give a smooth, professional look to your project.

The actual stitch creates a straight stitch that, with every few stitches, throws the needle over the folded hem. The purpose of this is to catch as small an amount of fabric as you can to make the stitch near invisible.

To achieve this stitch, you will need a blind hem foot; most sewing machines will have one. This foot has a guide for the fold of your fabric which you can follow; many of these feet allow you to adjust the guide too.

Before sewing a blind hem along your final fabric, always sew one on a practice piece first to make sure you're only catching a tiny amount of the folded fabric. Use the same colour thread as your fabric to ensure a near invisible finish to your work.
