Debbie Shore's Tips for Free-Motion Embroidery | Video Tutorial
Intimidated by free-motion embroidery? No need to be! Follow this video filled with Debbie Shore's tips and you'll be an experimental embroiderer in no time!
My advice is as follows:
- Drop your feed teeth/dogs – make sure you're familiar with the anatomy of your sewing machine, and find out where you can toggle this: some machines will have a button, whereas others may have a mechanism inside the accessory compartment. If your machine does not have this facility, you can use a plastic plate to put over the teeth/dogs. Alternatively, you can always turn your stitch length down to zero. You want the teeth/dogs to not be moving, as you are meant to be in control of the movement of the fabric – not the machine.
- You also need a free-motion embroidery foot – look at the manufacturer instructions for your sewing machine, to see which is the best one for you.
- Use an extension table for your machine – this provides extra support.
- For extra grip, use quilting gloves – the silicone pads on the fingers will allow you to have more control of your fabric.
- Practise getting used to the rhythm of your stitching – the faster you move the fabric, the longer your stitch will be. So I recommend practising first to find a cadence that you like.
