Gathering foot
Looking for a quick way to gather your fabric without making multiple stitch lines and pulling thread? A gathering foot is ideal for making soft gathers in your fabric in no time at all.
So how does this foot work? The toe is actually angled downwards so it pushes the fabric underneath the foot quickly as you stitch.
- This is another foot that you'll need to screw to the take-up lever; so, unscrew the 'ankle' your regular foot is attached to (keep these safely to one side so you don't lose them!) and screw in the gathering foot.
- To begin sewing, you will need to increase the length of your stitch – I increased mine to number 4 – and the tension on your machine, almost as high as it will go.
- Always practise on a scrap piece of fabric first, as you may find you need to increase or reduce your tension to achieve the gathering required.
- I recommend cutting a longer length of fabric than instructed, as you can always cut it back afterwards.
- Here's a little trick if you want to attach a gathered fabric to a non-gathered fabric for a quick tiered effect!
Place the fabric to be gathered on the bottom, right side facing up and underneath the foot. Place the non-gathered fabric on top, right side facing down and tucking it into the groove in the foot. Start to sew – the fabric on the bottom will start to gather and the top fabric will stay flat. You will need to sew slowly, as the fabric will want to slip or twist.
