Half Square Triangles
Half square triangles, known also as ‘HSTs’ or ‘triangle squares’, are a popular, simple quilting block design.
Half square triangles, known also as ‘HSTs’ or ‘triangle squares’, are a popular, simple quilting block design. They are made by joining a patterned print triangle to a plain triangle to form a square (commonly referred to as a ‘unit’). These squares are then sewn together to create a finished block.
So, to get started, let's have a look at the technique to making half square triangle units, which creates two units in the same colourway. An accurate ¼in (5mm) seam allowance is essential.
If you're using this technique to make my Block of the Month Quilt, then make sure you repeat this process to make the number of units listed for each block in the various colourways.
In the video, I cover the whole process of creating these units, from cutting out to trimming down, so if you'd like more detail on how to trim your units or blocks then take a look at my tutorial page. I've added written instructions on how to chain piece your units below, as it's quicker and saves on thread, but if you don't want to do it this way then simply skip step 5!
