Needle sizes
Needles vary in length, point shape and thickness depending on their purpose.
Needles vary in length, point shape and thickness depending on their purpose. I'd suggest keeping a pack of sharps in various sizes in your sewing kit for general use. The smaller the size of the needle, the thicker it will be, so a size '1' needle will be quite thick compared to a size '12', which will be finer. The eye of the needle should be large enough to accommodate your thread, but don't be tempted to use a large-eyed needle with fine thread, or the needle will leave holes in your work.
If you're working with stretch fabric, choose a ball-point needle. These have a slightly rounded tip that separates the yarns of the fabric instead of cutting through them, helping to prevent laddering.
These tables give you an overview of the available needle sizes.
