Sewing with Knit Fabrics

Knitted fabrics can create the most relaxed, comfortable clothing but can also be a little intimidating, so weather it’s dresses, shorts, leisure wear or t-shirts, here’s a few pointers to help you sew the perfect seam!

A simple, straight skirt would be a good place to start, with no zips or darts, there are many patterns on the market, try a cotton interlock or cotton jersey for best results. Take a look at the washing instructions on your fabric as some may shrink. If you have a local fabric store, feel the fabric for thickness and stretch, if your garment is quite fitted some knitted fabrics can become quite transparent if the knit is fine!

An overlocker is beneficial if you’re sewing a lot of knitted fabrics, they produce quick, stretch stitches and trim the seam at the same time. It’s not a problem to sew with your sewing machine though, use a stretch stitch, or a narrow zig zag stitch to allow the stitch to stretch with the fabric.

If your fabric rolls at the edges, use a little spray starch to help flatten it.
