Stem stitch

Not just for flower stems, this hand-embroidered stitch makes a useful border or outline and can easily be used for lettering.

You will need your chosen embroidery thread/floss and an embroidery (or crewel) needle. The more strands of thread/floss you use, the thicker the line. I've used three strands in the steps below, as you can see how thick the stitch looks once it is finally embroidered. However, experiment with different numbers of strands to get the look you want to achieve. It's a good idea to draw the line you want to stitch over with an erasable marker pen first to create a neat and accurate line.
