What is a toile?

Here is the key information you need to know, plus some handy hints, if you're getting into dressmaking.

A toile is a test run of the garment you're making, made up in affordable fabric, to test that the pattern will fit before cutting into your expensive fabric. It allows you to make tweaks to the fit, particularly if the garment is fitted or involves darts that need to sit in the right position.

It may seem a time-consuming exercise but it's well worth the time: there would be nothing worse than making up your garment in your chosen fabric, only to find it doesn't fit!
