Zipper foot
Most sewing machines will come with a zipper foot, and it's an invaluable foot to have for sewing. It's also not just for sewing in zips!
Unlike a regular foot, a zipper foot has notches on each side that allow the needle to sit closer to a raised edge, such as zip teeth (or coil) or a piping cord in piping.
- The foot can be clipped onto your sewing machine 'ankle' on either side, so the needle can stitch a left or right edge closely more easily.
- If you have a computerized machine, you may not need to refit the presser foot to stitch an opposite side of a zip – you can use the stitch width button to swing the needle to the left or right.
- A zipper foot is not just for zips! You can use it to secure cord in home-made piping cord, and sew the piping to the edge of your fabric with an even closer line of stitching.
Or if you're topstitching an edge that is close to hardware or straps, you can continue to sew without the foot moving around or getting stuck.
