Autumn Wonky Street Cushion | Debbie Shore Sewing Pattern
Very easy |
Quick Links: What you'll need Project steps
Part of the Wonky Street series, Debbie Shore shares how to create a street-scene cushion cover.
Debbie Shore demonstrates how to create a charming street-scene cushion cover. This fun and creative project allows quilters to explore the art of freehand embroidery while adding a whimsical touch to their home décor – you can decorate your living room or conservatory accordingly whatever the weather! Debbie’s easy-to-follow instructions will guide you through the process of designing and stitching a quirky street scene, complete with buildings, trees, flowers and more.
The appliqué offers a great opportunity to use up some of those fabric scraps you’ve been saving and, if you’re not ready to give free-motion embroidery a go, you can stitch the pieces on by hand either with a straight stitch like backstitch or running stitch, with blanket stitch or another stitch of your choice.
I’ve used interfacing on the wrong side of the front pillow fabric to help stabilise it and prevent puckering when sewing. The appliqué pieces are adhered with fusible web, so they won’t move around while you are stitching.
Note: Use a ½in (1.25cm) seam allowance throughout.
Finished size: 16 x 16in (40 x 40cm)

You will need:
Equipment
- Sewing machine
- Fabric shears
- A free-motion embroidery/darning foot
- Erasable marker pen – avoid air- or water-erasable types as you’ll be ironing, and these inks can become permanent with heat. Instead, choose a chalk marker or heat-erasable pen
- Embroidery needle
Materials
- 51 x 35½in (130 x 90cm) of natural coloured (cream or ecru) cotton
- Scraps of plain and patterned fabric for the appliqué, including green and brown for the trees
- Machine thread for the free-motion embroidery – mine is dark brown
- Dark grey, red and green embroidery thread
- Fusible web adhesive sheet
- 17in (43cm) square of lightweight fusible interfacing
