Block of the Month 2025: Block 9 – Bargello

This block is a patchwork masterpiece, but as with most of the blocks in this quilt, creating it is much easier and more straightforward than it first appears.

About the quilt block

In essence, Bargello involves cutting and joining long strips of fabric, sub-cutting them crossways to the seams, rearranging the new strips and restitching to create patterns that look much more complicated than they are. Often, each fabric patch ends up as a square, but they can also be rectangles or, as here, the sizes can vary to create a spectacular effect that leaves people wondering how you did it.

Tips

Bargello gives a real feel of movement in the fabrics, but careful colour placement is key to creating this effect.

  • The tricky element to this block is sewing accurately and matching seams carefully, so take your time.
  • It is important to sew with a scant ¼in (5mm) seam allowance as there are many seams, meaning that a small error each time will soon add up to become a larger issue.
  • When joining the initial strips together, you should press after each join, first to one side, then to the other and so on. This helps to prevent the fabric from curving.

We will be making two mirror-image blocks that we join together to make the final block.

By making this block, you’ll:

  1. Dip into the wonderful world of Bargello quilting.
  2. Learn yet another patchwork technique – once you’ve understood the principles of bargello you’ll be able to create your own designs.
  3. Gain confidence in your patchwork abilities.

Note: stitch with an accurate ¼in (5mm) seam allowance.

Unfinished block size: 12½ x 24½in (31.75 x 62.25cm).
