Electric Fan Block of the Month #5 and #9 Quilt (2023)

You'll learn the art of curve piecing by making Debbie Shore's quilt block project this month.

Learn the curve piecing method with our quilt block project this month. I've labelled these blocks as Block 5 and Block 9 in this year's sew-along, but technically they’re made in exactly the same way – the only difference is the colourway.

For both blocks, we’re going to use curved piecing. Although sewing curves sounds complicated, it’s easier than you may think; just make sure you pin or temporarily secure the curved edges from the inside outwards, so the fabric lies flat and matches correctly. We’re also returning to our old favourite, the Half Square Triangle (HST), although this time we’ll be using a four-in-one method.

What is curved piecing? Curved piecing in quilting is a technique used to sew fabric pieces with curved edges together, creating smooth, flowing shapes rather than traditional straight-line seams. This method allows for more dynamic and organic designs in quilts, such as waves, circles, or flower-like patterns. Common curved piecing quilt patterns include: Drunkard's Path, Double Wedding Ring and New York Beauty.

Note: These instructions in step 1 will create four Half Square Triangles (HSTs) in one go. However, please be aware that the outside edges of each finished HST will be on the bias, so you'll need to take care when sewing the units together later.
