Quilt As You Go Block of the Month #9 | Sew-Along (2023)

Debbie Shore shares her favourite technique for Quilting As You Go to help save time.

The quilting method below enables you to quilt your individual blocks right to their edges before adding sashing and borders, which makes the whole process more manageable. All the stitching can be done on the sewing machine, although it’s achievable by hand if you prefer to do this.

Your blocks, unusually, will be sitting on their points (so diagonally) rather than their straight edges, meaning you will need to add triangles to the ends of the outer blocks to ‘square’ off your quilt. This means, as well as quilting your main blocks, you will need to cut and quilt these outside triangles too.

After quilting the blocks and outer triangles, you’ll then join them together in rows, with the addition of sashing (these are semi-decorative strips of fabric that sit between blocks, acting as borders). There are five rows in total, and we’ll be introducing each row of the quilt gradually over the course of the year.

Once all the rows are made, we’ll then join the rows together, again with the sashing, before finally binding the quilt at the end of the year to complete the project. Click through to learn how to assemble your quilt

Note: Use a ¼in (5mm) seam allowance throughout unless otherwise stated.

Equipment

  • Sewing machine with a regular sewing foot, a darning foot (if you are free-motion quilting), and a walking (even-/dual-feed foot)
  • Rotary cutter and cutting  mat
  • Quilting ruler
  • Tacking/basting spray or pins
  • Optional: hand-sewing needle, if you wish to hand stitch your quilt

Materials

Note: cutting amounts for the wadding/batting, backing fabric and sashing strips are given in the step-by-step instructions. For the purposes of demonstrating, different fabrics have been used for the blocks.

  • Backing fabric – 4yd (3.5m) x width of fabric . Note this quantity includes the backing for each block and back sashing
  • Wadding/batting – you will need a Twin (UK single) size pack (72 x 90in, or 183 x 228.75cm)
  • Your trimmed, unquilted blocks
