In Debbie Shore's sew-along, you'll make a sailing boat block with half square triangles.
It’s time to make our second sailing boat, this one with colourful patchwork sails and a patchwork hull. Half square triangles, squares and triangles form the sails in this pieced panel, and the boat hull is created from a rectangle and half square triangles. Notice how the colour combinations of the sails make it seem as if one sail is in shadow while the other is in full sun. This boat balances the appliquéd boat in Block 2 nicely.

You will need:
Equipment
- Sewing machine
- Rotary cutter and cutting mat
- Quilting ruler
- Optional: square ruler
Materials
Fabrics (see my Introduction to the 2024 Block of the Month). From these, you will need to cut:
- One 3in (7.5cm) square in FAB1
- One 7in (17.75cm) square in FAB1 – cut diagonally into two triangles; on the two straight edges (not the diagonal edge you just cut), cut one triangle down to 5½in (14cm)
- One 5 x 3in (12.75 x 7.5cm) strip in FAB1
- Two 6½ x 1½in (16.5 x 3.75cm) strips in FAB1
- One 5 x 1½in (12.75 x 3.75cm) strip in FAB1
- One 11½ x 4in (29.25 x 10cm) strip in FAB1
- One 7½ x 2½in (19 x 6.5cm) strip in FAB5
- One 3in (7.5cm) square in FAB5
- One 1 x 8½in (2.5 x 21.5cm) strip in FAB5 (for the mast)
- Three 2½in (6.5cm) squares in FAB6 – cut diagonally into six triangles
- Two 2½in (6.5cm) squares in FAB7 – cut diagonally into four triangles
- Two 2in (5cm) squares in FAB7
- Four 2in (5cm) squares in FAB8
- Two 2½in (6.5cm) squares in FAB9 – cut diagonally into four pieces; discard one triangle
