Who Doesn't Love A Beach Hut? Block of the Month #9 (2024)

Make Debbie Shore's nautical quilt block featuring three appliqued beach huts.

The name of this quilt block says it all: who doesn’t love a beach hut? Of course, this quintessential British beach icon had to feature on this quilt! A beach hut is a must for a day at the coast and here we have three! Apart from different colourways, they are identical. I prefer to complete all the appliqué on one beach hut at a time, but if you prefer to prepare all three for appliquéing at the same time, that’s fine. If you do wish to work them all at the same time, assembly-line style, position the base of the centre hut first and then add the ones on each side, ¾in (2cm) apart. Then add all the hut buildings, then the short roof pieces and so on.

Just as for Block 2, Riding the Prairie Point Waves, this block is raw-edge machine appliquéd. Refer back to steps 1 and 2 for that block to trace the template pieces onto the fusible web sheets, fuse to the appropriate fabric and cut out, ready for raw-edge machine appliqué. See the cutting list below for which pieces to cut from which fabric.

Note: stitch with an accurate ¼in (5mm) seam allowance when joining the background pieces.

Unfinished block size: 18½ x 12½in (47 x 31.75cm)

You will need:

Equipment

  • Sewing machine
  • Rotary cutter
  • Quilting ruler
  • Quilting mat
  • Scissors
  • Fusible web (Bondaweb or Heat n’ Bond, for example) or spray adhesive, if you prefer
  • Coordinating or contrasting machine thread (depending on your preference)
  • Black thread
  • Templates

Materials

Fabrics (see my Introduction to the 2024 Block of the Month). From these, you will need to cut:

  • One 18½ x 4½in (47 x 11.5cm) rectangle in FAB4
  • One 18½ x 8½in (47 x 21.5cm) rectangle in FAB10, which you should already have cut out at the beginning
  • One 10 x 12½in (25.5 x 31.75cm) rectangle in FAB10 – this is the section of the quilt with the two appliquéd birds on it, and it won’t be needed until we come to assemble the quilt, so set it aside for now

Follow steps 1 and 2 for Block 2 to trace the template pattern shapes onto fusible web, fuse onto the appropriate fabric and cut out the following:

  • Three main beach huts: one in each of FAB1, FAB7 and FAB8
  • Three beach-hut doors: one in each of FAB1, FAB7 and FAB9
  • Three heart shapes: one in each of in FAB1, FAB8 and FAB9
  • Three roofs (two templates per beach hut) in FAB5
  • Three beach-hut bases in FAB5
  • Three windows in FAB6
  • Three flags in FAB7
