Here’s another optical-illusion block for our quilt that’s surprisingly simple and very satisfying to make.
This block is made up of squares and rectangles that are stitched together to create four identical 6½in (16.5cm) units which, when rearranged and joined together, have a 3D look – it’s all about the placement of the fabric and, as with Block 3, looks far more complicated to construct than it really is. In fact, the only seams that need matching are when you join the four units together!
Note: stitch with an accurate ¼in (5mm) seam allowance.
Unfinished block size: 12½in (31.75cm) square.

You will need:
Equipment
- Sewing machine
- Rotary cutter
- Quilting ruler
- Quilting mat
- Scissors
Materials
Fabrics (see my Introduction to the 2025 Block of the Month). From these, you will need to cut:
- One 2in (5cm) square in Fab B
- Two 5 x 2in (12.75 x 5cm) strips in Fab B
- One 6½ x 2in (16.5 x 5cm) strip in Fab B
- One 2in (5cm) square in Fab C
- Two 5 x 2in (12.75 x 5cm) strips in Fab C
- One 6½ x 2in (16.5 x 5cm) strip in Fab C
- One 2in (5cm) square in Fab D
- Two 5 x 2in (12.75 x 5cm) strips in Fab D
- One 6½ x 2in (16.5 x 5cm) strip in Fab D
- One 2in (5cm) square in Fab E
- Two 5 x 2in (12.75 x 5cm) strips in Fab E
- One 6½ x 2in (16.5 x 5cm) strip in Fab E
- Four 3½ x 2in (9 x 5cm) strips in Fab F
- Four 3½ x 2in (9 x 5cm) strips in WW
- Four 2in (5cm) squares in WW
