Block of the Month 2025: Blocks 2 & 13 – Curved Flying Geese and Pole Dance

This month you get two blocks instead of one, and since both are repeated there’s plenty to keep you busy.
Although often seen as individual blocks, I’ve grouped these two blocks together as one. In the finished quilt, these blocks are reproduced in different colourways in the top-left and bottom-right corners. I’m providing the instructions for them early in the BOTM process so this will give you plenty of time to complete both blocks throughout the year.
Although the Flying Geese blocks look curved, they are, in fact, made up from squares and rectangles.
The Pole Dance block is made from Half Square Triangles (HSTs) and squares. Instructions are given for making Four in One Go and Eight in One Go Half Square Triangles, where the outside edges will be on the bias, so try to avoid stretching (a small spray of starch will help stabilize these edges). I would also advise pressing seam allowances open as there are a lot of seams in this block!

- Quilting ruler
- Quilting mat
- Scissors
- Glue pen (optional)
- Spray starch (optional)

Fabrics (see my Introduction to the 2025 Block of the Month). From these, you will need to cut:
Flying Geese (top left)
- Sixteen 3½in (9cm) squares in WW
- Eight 3½ x 6½in (9 x 16.5cm) strips in Fab D
Flying Geese (bottom right)
- Sixteen 3½in (9cm) squares in WW
- Eight 3½ x 6½in (9 x 16.5cm) strips in Fab C
Pole Dance (top left)
- One 4¼in (10.75cm) Fab C square
- One 6¼in (16cm) Fab C square
- Four 2½in (6.25cm) Fab C squares
- Two 4¼in (10.75cm) Fab F squares
- Four 2½in (6.25cm) Fab F squares
- One 4¼in (10.75cm) Fab H square
- One 6¼in (16cm) Fab H square
- Four 2½in (6.25cm) Fab H squares
- Two 6¼in (16cm) WW squares
Pole Dance (bottom right)
- One 4¼in (10.75cm) Fab D square
- One 6¼in (16cm) Fab D square
- Four 2½in (6.25cm) Fab D squares
- Two 4¼in (10.75cm) Fab F squares
- Four 2½in (6.25cm) Fab F squares
- One 4¼in (10.75cm) Fab H square
- One 6¼in (16cm) Fab H square
- Four 2½in (6.25cm) Fab H squares
- Two 6¼in (16cm) WW squares
