Quick & Easy Bunting Sewing Pattern With Photo Tutorial
Very easy |
Quick Links: What you'll need Project steps
Debbie Shore's easiest-ever bunting tutorial is one you'll return to again and again.
Whether the occasion calls for patriotic red, white and blue or you decide to make it in different colours, handmade bunting is such a simple way of decorating anything from street 'dos to birthday parties.
Fat quarters are an affordable way of buying coordinating fabrics. A pack of three – one red, one white and one blue – will make quite a good length of bunting! I've place the strips at angles to add a little interest, but if you sew them straight your fabric will go further, as you'll use less for each pennant. if you prefer to make your own binding, cut 120 x 2in (3m x 5cm) of fabric, fold the long edges to the centre then fold the whole length in half and press. A 1in (2.5cm) bias tape maker would be helpful! If you’d like to make the distance between each pennant longer, the binding will need to be longer in length.

Finished size: 33/8yd (3m) long garland, with each pennant measuring 8in (20cm) deep
Note: Use a ¼in (5mm) seam allowance

You will need:
Equipment
- Template
- Ruler
- Erasable marking pen
- Rotary cutter and self-healing cutting mat or fabric scissors
- Sewing machine
- Optional: point turner or knitting needle
Materials
Note: the amounts below make 14 pennants
- Three fat quarters (FQs) of different-coloured fabrics – each FQ is approx. 22 x 18in (56 x 46cm)
- One fat quarter (FQ) for the back – I’ve used blue
- 33/8yd (3m) of 1in (2.5cm) wide binding – this doesn’t need to be cut on the bias. I’ve used shop-bought bias binding
- Coordinating thread
