Christmas Table Runner & Placemat Set | Easy Sewing Pattern
Easy |
Quick Links: What you'll need Project steps
Set the scene for Christmas feasting with Debbie Shore's sewing pattern for a table runner and mats.
Create a festive Christmas table with Debbie Shore's appliqué sewing pattern, featuring two charming designs: trees with a shining star or snowmen. Each design comes in two sizes—use the larger size for the table runner and the smaller size for place mats. The pattern includes instructions for a table runner with tree appliqué, two snowmen appliqué place mats, and two tree place mats. Choose traditional red, green, and white fabrics for a classic look, or match your fabrics to your holiday décor. A neutral, plain background fabric works best.
I suggest that you machine stitch rather than hand sew the appliqué pieces in place as the fusible web backing makes the fabric quite stiff to sew through. I’ve used machine blanket stitch, but if your machine doesn’t have a blanket-stitch option, don’t worry – you can get good results with other decorative stitches, such as blind hem stitch or zigzag stitch.
The red frame around each design is embellished with triangles that are sewn using traditional quilting techniques for making what are called half square triangles. To make the process even easier, I’ve cut the fabric pieces for these a little larger than necessary so that they can be trimmed to the required size. This enables you to get neat, precise results every time. I’ve also cut the border strips a little longer than needed so they can be trimmed neatly, too.
Note that the instructions guide you to add the appliqué before quilting the layers (see steps 8–9). Because the snowmen are added before the borders, you have to work this way with that design, but if you choose to use the trees, you can quilt before you add the appliqué which saves you the bother of having to stop and start your quilting lines either side of the motifs.
