Collared Box Top with Vents | Quick Dressmaking Pattern

Create a long-sleeve, smart-casual top and learn how to draw up and adapt patterns to fit.

Create a stylish and comfortable collared box top with vents using this easy-to-follow dressmaking pattern by Debbie Shore. Perfect for beginners, this pattern will guides you step-by-step through the process of making a custom-fit top with a classic collar and functional side vents.

If you've made our Simple Box Top pattern, then you will already be familiar with some of the key techniques we've used to create this dressmaking pattern. In this project, I'm following a similar process but this time I’ve lengthened the sleeves, widened the neck and created a little front collar, as well as adding side vents. If you still have the pattern from last year, then you could use this as a base pattern for the new adaptations. This time I’ve sewn regular seams with a ½in (1.25cm) seam allowance instead of making French seams.

You may wish to finish your seams with pinking shears or an overlocker/serger if you have one, particularly if your fabric frays easily like the viscose I’ve used. Jersey fabrics won’t need finishing as they don’t fray.

Note that my pattern drawings aren’t to scale – these are just to show how to mark your measurements. I used tracing paper for my main pattern, but wallpaper or wrapping paper works well too!

Note: Use a ½in (1.25cm) seam allowance unless otherwise stated.
