Comfortable Garden Kneeling Cushion | Download & Sew
Easy |
Quick Links: What you'll need Project steps
Take the stress off your knees when gardening or cleaning with this durable kneeling cushion! It's comfortable, plus easy to carry around with a sturdy handle.
This is a useful and practical project that would make a great gift for a gardening friend or anyone who does a lot of cleaning, and it’s easily personalized. It features a handle for carrying and has a zipped gusset so that the cushion pad can be removed to wash the cover. I’ve used a waterproof canvas for the base to prevent the cushion pad from getting damp on the ground. For the outer fabric, choose something sturdy and either wipe-clean or machine washable in a pattern chosen with the recipient in mind.
Made-to-measure – make this kneeling cushion/pad as big as you need it to be!
Make the kneeling cushion larger if you wish: simply increase the size of the top and bottom and measure the sides to calculate the length of the gusset as explained in step 3. Make sure you source a cushion pad before you cut the fabric as these come in limited sizes, then cut the top and bottom rectangles the same size as the top of the pad (see step 1) – the seam allowances will make the cover slightly smaller, which will help firm up the kneeling cushion.
Why not make the Gardening Set: Apron to match the kneeling cushion? It has pockets for your gardening gloves, seed packets and small tools and is another simple project. If you want to push your skills a little further, you could make the Gardening Set: Tool Caddy as well.
By the end of this project, you’ll have:
- Made a zipped gusset, which is a feature of many seat cushions.
- Had a go at sewing with waterproof fabric.
- Made a simple handle.
- Learnt how to adapt this pattern to fit a different size of cushion pad.
Note: use a ¼in (5mm) seam allowance.
Finished size: 17½ x 11½ x 3in (44.5 x 29 x 7.5cm)

You will need:
Equipment
- Sewing machine with a needle suitable for your fabric
- Dressmaking shears
- Dressmaking pins
- Optional: fabric clips – you will find that these work better than pins if your fabric is thick or stiff
- 7in (18cm) circle template (a side plate works well)
- Optional: erasable fabric marker
Materials
- 44 x 19½in (112 x 49.5cm) of top fabric
- 18 x 12in (45.75 x 30.5cm) of bottom fabric: I recommend waterproof canvas
- 20in (51cm) zip
- 18 x 12 (45.75 x 30.5cm) cushion pad: If you can’t find a rectangular pad, try using an 18in (45.75cm) square pad, but remove handfuls of the filler until you have the right size.
