Cookie the Polar Bear | Plushie Fleece Toy Sewing Pattern

Cookie the Polar Bear toy will soon be ready to be wrapped and placed under the Christmas tree.

Cookie is a soft and cuddly fleece bear toy who wears a scarf to keep him warm in winter. He’s just over half a yard (half a metre) tall, so he is quite a big project. You’ll see in the video tutorial I’ve made a brown bear companion, using honey beige fleece; black fleece would work well too – or you could choose any colour you like!

Fleece is a forgiving synthetic fabric with some stretch that doesn’t fray, so it’s easy to work with and washes well. When you join the pieces, there will be times when you may need to ‘ease’ the seams, stretching slightly to make the pattern pieces match. This is perfectly acceptable and all part of the process, and is a benefit of using stretch fabric.

When cutting out the toy pattern pieces, if they state ‘cut two’ then make sure they are mirror-imaged.

I’ve used a safety toy nose and safety eyes, although I still pop a little strong wet fabric glue behind them to be sure they are really secure! You could make the eyes and nose in black felt if you prefer.

I’ve added a Christmas-tree appliqué to the scarf, which you can find on the template sheet, but this is optional.

Size: 19in (48.25cm) tall

Note: Use a ¼in (5mm) seam allowance throughout, unless otherwise stated.

You will need:

Equipment

  • Fabric shears
  • Sewing machine
  • Hand-sewing needle and thread
  • Erasable fabric marker pen
  • Optional: strong wet fabric glue to ensure the eyes and nose are really secure – I’d recommend this if your polar bear is for a young child

Materials

  • 59 x 35½in (150 x 90cm) of fleece fabric
  • Approx. 17½oz (500g) of toy filler
  • Two toy safety eyes and one nose: I used 3/8in (10mm) eyes and a nose ¾in (20mm) across
  • 43½ x 6in (110cm x 15cm) of fleece fabric for the scarf
  • 5 x 4in (13 x 10cm) of green felt for the tree appliqué on the scarf
  • 2in (5cm) square of gold felt for the star on the tree appliqué
  • 2in (5cm) square of red felt for the appliqué pot
  • 2in (5cm) length of green ricrac to decorate the appliqué pot
  • Embroidery thread, for stitching the appliqué shapes
