Debbie Shore's Dressmaking Studio: Kimono Jacket
Easy |
Quick Links: What you'll need Project steps
This made-to-measure loose-fitting jacket is simple to make and flattering to wear; choose a floaty fabric to create a beautiful drape. I’ve used a viscose crepe, which is lightweight and comfortable.
You can create this casual kimono jacket in a fine fabric of your choice, though I do recommend a walking foot to stop slippage as well as a small stitch. Support the garment to the left of the needle to stop the weight distorting the stitch line.
For this garment, measure from the nape of your neck to the desired length of your sleeve, then from the nape of your neck to your desired overall length of the kimono. Add 4in (10cm) or so to each measurement, as this is a really easy project to make smaller if you need to. This fun project is from my book Debbie Shore's Sewing Room Secrets: Essential Skills for Dressmakers, where you can find further guidance on dressmaking tips.
Note: Use a ⅝in (1.5cm) seam allowance

You will need:
Equipment
- Large sheet of drafting or tracing paper
- Ruler
- Pencil
- French curve
- Optional: walking foot
Materials
- Use your body measurements and step 1 to calculate your fabric requirements; my centre back is 32in (81.5cm) and the sleeve is 24in (61cm). I used 2¼yd (2m) of fabric measuring 54in (137cm) wide.
