Easy Christmas Stocking Sewing Pattern | with faux fur & patchwork
Easy |
Quick Links: What you'll need Project steps
Fluffy and cozy yet frosty and sparkly, this project gives a new look to the traditional Christmas stocking and is fun to make.
About the project
This stocking has a patchwork front and a plain back, and the seams of the patchwork are covered with faux chenille strips, which not only add a fun element but will cover any wonky seams! Adding strips of fabric to the stocking then brushing them to make them fluffy is a fun way of adding texture to the fabric, and of course this technique can be used for many projects, including quilts and bag. Just imagine what a cozy jacket or gilet you could make!
I’ve used flannel for my strips. As the fabric is already brushed, it’s really soft, and by brushing it, it just gets softer! If you don’t have flannel, you can use ordinary cotton fabric. Cutting the strips on the bias prevents the edges from fraying, so they are fluffy but without threads of the fabric coming away.
Finished size: 14 x 19½in (35.5 x 49.5cm).
Note: use a ¼in (5mm) seam allowance unless otherwise stated.
Make it your own!
- I’ve used white and silver fabrics, but you could use any colours you like – traditional reds and greens, black and white, prints or plains.
- The faux fur cuff could be replaced with fleece or cotton if you prefer.
- Embroidering snowflakes and trees adds a personal touch, and you could add other motifs if you like: additional styles of snowflake would look lovely.
- Embroider on the initials of the recipient for a personal touch using backstitch or stem stitch. (Take a look at the embroidery stitch guide that comes with the Gingerbread House Wall Hanging for help with your embroidery, if needed.)
By the end of this project, you’ll have:
- Learnt how to make your own ‘chenille’ strips.
- Done some simple patchwork and embroidery.
- Made a new-look Christmas stocking.

- If you had fun with the chenille-effect flannel strips, see the Zipped Storage Case where I show you how you can use the same technique to edge an appliquéd heart.

- Embroidery needle
- Erasable marker pen: I used a heat-erasable pen

- Twenty-nine 3½in (9cm) squares of fabric for the front, including four that are fairly plain if you wish to embroider them – you can cut your squares from two or more fabrics
- 16 x 22in (40.5 x 56cm) of fabric for the back: I used the same cotton fabric as for some of my squares
- 32 x 22in (81.25 x 56cm) of lining fabric: I used the same cotton fabric as for some of my squares
- 12in (30.5cm) of ribbon to hang the stocking: mine is silver to match the embroidery
- 19½ x 10in (49.5 x 25.5cm) of faux fur (or other fabric) for the cuff: I used white
- 44 x 19½in (112 x 49.5cm) of flannel (brushed cotton) for the chenille strips: I used white
