Edwin the Sitting Elf | Christmas Toy Sewing Pattern

An elf on a shelf is a popular Christmas decoration, but Edwin is a soft and cuddly version so he’s lovely to play with, too.

Edwin is a cute character wearing his festive hat with a bell, a smart pair of fleece shorts with braces and curly-toed shoes. He has a weighted bottom so can sit on a shelf, and is made from jersey fabric which, as it’s a stretch fabric, can be moulded to give shape to his face and body. Jersey and fleece are both easy fabrics to sew with; they don’t fray, and my striped jersey had no right or wrong side. I’d suggest you use a small stitch of about 2.2 on your machine when sewing the jersey fabric, and I’d recommend using a jersey or ballpoint needle too. Since all the fabrics used are soft, Edwin is a super-cuddly elf!

I’ve dusted a little blusher on Edwin’s cheeks to give him a healthy glow, but this may disappear after a while, especially when he is played with a lot, so it may need retouching from time to time!

Finished height:12in (30.5cm) when sitting and 24in (61cm) full height.

Note: use a ¼in (5mm) seam allowance.

You will need:

Equipment

  • Sewing machine and a ballpoint needle or jersey needle
  • Strong wet fabric glue: I used Gutermann HT2
  • Erasable fabric pen
  • Blusher for the cheeks
  • Brown alcohol-ink pen for freckles
  • Safety pin

Materials

  • 44 x 18in (112 x 46cm) rectangle of striped jersey fabric
  • 20 x 11in (51 x 28cm) rectangle of flesh-coloured jersey fabric
  • 44 x 10in (112 x 25.5cm) red fleece for the shorts
  • 4 x 3in (10 x 7.5cm) rectangle of brown felt for the hair
  • 8 x 3in (20.5 x 7.5cm) rectangle of white felt for the shoe fringes
  • 10 x 12in (25.5 x 30.5cm) rectangle of green felt for the collar, cuffs and shoes – you will need to squeeze the pieces on to fit, so if in doubt, buy a little extra
  • 12 x 6in (30.5 x 15cm) of leftover fabric to make a weighted pouch – I had some extra flesh-coloured jersey
  • 14 x 1in (35.5 x 2.5cm) strip of faux-fur trim
  • Two pompoms for the shoes
  • Bell or pompom for the hat
  • ¼in (5mm) safety eyes – or you could embroider these if you prefer
  • Doll needle
  • Thread to match your fabrics
  • Six-stranded red embroidery thread for the shoes
  • Toy filler
  • A cup of craft filler pellets or sand to give Edwin a bit of weight
  • 10in (25.5cm) of ¼in (5mm) wide elastic
  • Two 1in (2.5cm) buttons: I didn’t have the right colour, so I covered mine in striped jersey fabric, as explained in the steps
