Block of the Month 2025: Block 12 – Entwined Star

The final block for this year, appropriately for the Christmas season, is a star. It’s another clever visual puzzle that’s easier to make than it first appears.

About the quilt block

The final block for this year, appropriately for the Christmas season, is a star. It’s another clever visual puzzle that’s easier to make than it first appears.

As with several other blocks in this quilt, clever placement of contrasting fabrics creates the 3D look. It’s a striking design that would work well as a repeating motif on a quilt or as the central motif on a cushion cover. It would even make an eye-catching motif on the front of a patchwork bag or used to create a set of festive table mats.

By making this block, you’ll:

  1. Get to grips with the two-in-one-go and four-in-one-go methods of making half-square-triangle units – useful techniques for all your patchwork projects.
  2. Learn how to get around a tricky piecing issue by stitching a partial seam.
  3. Create another stylish 12in (30.5cm) finished-size block to add to your collection.

Note: stitch with an accurate ¼in (5mm) seam allowance.

Unfinished block size: 12½in (31.75cm) square.
