How To Finish Your Block Of The Month Quilt Sew-Along (2023)

Learn how to finish your Block of the Month quilt with Debbie Shore's simple-to-follow tutorial.

This is the moment when the quilt you have been making over the course of the year comes together and you can stand back and admire all your hard work.

Now that you’ve completed all your blocks, you’ve reached that important stage when you can finally put all the pieces together. Usually, this can be quite time-consuming, especially if you choose to quilt by hand or use an intricate vermicelli (meandering) stitch pattern, for example, but because this is a Quilt As You Go Quilt, you’ve done all the hard work already. And if you haven’t done the quilting yet, don’t worry – just refer to the 'Quilt As You Go' instructions for this quilt to quilt your blocks, cut and quilt the WW triangles and then join the blocks and triangles into rows with sashing and cornerstones/posts.

So now all that’s left to do is to join the rows, trim off the excess fabric from around the edge and then bind the quilt. I think that homemade binding looks best, but you can use readymade binding if you prefer. And don’t forget to post pictures of your quilt when you’re done!

It is recommended that you refer to the 'Quilt As You Go' instructions for help with all of the techniques. Also see ‘Hand sewing for beginners’ for info on slipstitch plus ‘Bias binding’ for how to join binding strips – both these are in the 'Tips & Techniques' section on the right-hand side of the webpage.
